Without waiting for Donald Trump to concede defeat, world leaders have congratulated newly elected President Joe Biden.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she is looking forward to working with Joe Biden on a "future partnership."

"The United States and Europe will continue to work together to address the enormous challenges of our time," Merkel said.

In a tweet congratulating Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “We have a lot of work to do to meet the current challenges. Let's work together. ”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was "interested in working with Biden and Kamala Harris on a collaborative basis" and congratulated them on their "good luck".

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called Biden a "true friend" of his country.

"I am confident that relations between the two countries will be further strengthened after he takes over the presidency."

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, however, did not show much warmth. He mocked American democracy, saying: "Whatever the outcome of the election, there is a definite slippage in the American administration at all levels, political, civic and moral."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a lengthy statement congratulating Biden and Kamala Harris after tweeting, saying "the relationship between Canada and the United States is unique - unique in the world."

The governments of the two countries will "work together to establish peace and unity, achieve economic prosperity and tackle global climate problems."
